The Innovation Club organized a workshop at Pandit Lalit Mohan Sharma Shri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University Campus Rishikesh. In the seminar, experts from different countries delivered lectures on climate change, other natural disasters, and risk reduction management in the Himalayas.
In the program organized on Thursday, KwaZulu Natal University South Africa’s Dr. Shri Niwas Pillay, former Director of HNB Garhwal University Srinagar Prof. KC Purohit, Principal of the college, Prof. Mahavir Singh Rawat, jointly inaugurated the program.
Dr. Srinivas Pillay said that natural calamities, landslides, floods, and cloudburst incidents are often seen in the Himalayan region. This region of the Himalayas is also considered very sensitive from the point of view of geological structure. Due to geological movements, there is a constant risk of small and big earthquakes here.
In the last few decades, the problem of soil erosion and landslides in the mountains has been increasing continuously due to unplanned development. Incidents of landslides in South Africa make big news in the newspapers, but they are not given that much importance in India. The unexpected development, ruthless exploitation of natural resources, and increasing urbanization have disturbed the environmental balance here, due to which natural disasters are growing.
It is said that Uttarakhand is considered very sensitive from the point of view of earthquakes. Most of it is located in the Himalayan terrain, so the possibility of an earthquake remains strong here. Apart from this, various experts expressed their views. On this occasion, Prof. Gulshan Kumar Dhingra, Prof. Dinesh Chandra Goswami, Prof. PK Singh, Prof. Shanti Prakash Sati, Prof. Anita Tomar, Prof. Devmani Tripathi, Prof. Durgakant Prasad Choudhary, Prof. Hemlata Mishra, etc.
